A waterfront is considered to be the most alluring way of connecting with the sea. Historically, these waterfronts supported international trade but later, were constrained by limited inland access. Today, Mumbai has a coastline of 167 km; but only 33 km of it is accessible to the citizens. Being
an Island city, Mumbai is known for its beaches and waterfront areas. It is responsible for 70% of India’s trade and 50% of passenger movement through water. But when it comes to tourism or leisure activities around its coastlines, there are very few options available, which is mostly
because of the lack of infrastructure. Thus, this project aims at reconnecting the urban core with marginalized waterfront through the creation of water-based recreational facilities and infrastructure. The revitalization would increase the spatial quality and meaning of the waterfront.
The project emphasizes the heritage docks of Mumbai. The shift of shipping activities from MBPT to JNPT allows potential growth for future endeavors. It will also offer a unique possibility to create several new public promenades. Port Land of neighborhoods can add to the ‘Cultural and Social Capital’ of Mumbai. These are the last remaining spaces that can be claimed by Mumbaikars to create a more livable space.
